Bern Township: four suppliers and private wells
Bern's 2025 comprehensive plan lists four public suppliers. The Bern Township Municipal Authority serves the area near the township building, West Ridge and the county facilities, and buys its water from the Reading Area Water Authority. RAWA serves West Shore, Greenfields and the airport area. Leesport serves the area next to the borough, and Western Berks Water Authority serves part of the township.

Limestone in the east. The plan describes limestone soils in the eastern half of the township and shale in the west, and calls for protecting groundwater in limestone areas.
New wells get tested. Bern's well ordinance requires a certified lab test before occupancy, including hardness of no more than 150 mg/L.

Older homes and lead
Census data show about 22% of Leesport's homes and 18% of Bern Township's were built in 1939 or earlier. Lead in tap water comes from service lines, solder and fixtures in the home, not the wells.

Private wells nearby
Leesport's 1996 joint plan with Ontelaunee and Perry townships said areas without public water rely on individual wells, and that limestone in the southern part of the area is susceptible to groundwater contamination.

Leesport and Bern Township water: common questions
Who supplies water in Leesport?
The Leesport Borough water system, which serves all of Leesport and nearby parts of Ontelaunee and Bern townships. EPA lists about 2,300 people served.
Where does Leesport's water come from?
Three wells, according to the borough's 2025 report: one in Leesport and two east of the borough in Ontelaunee Township. The water is chlorinated before it enters the pipes.
Is Leesport water hard?
The 2025 report doesn't list hardness, but it lists calcium at 63 mg/L and magnesium at 15.3 mg/L (2019 samples). By our math that's roughly 220 mg/L of hardness, about 13 grains per gallon, which Penn State Extension's scale calls very hard. Our free test confirms yours.
What does Leesport's 2025 report show for lead?
A 90th-percentile lead level of 12 ppb, under the 15 ppb action level, with 1 of 20 homes sampled above it. Lead comes from household plumbing, so a reverse osmosis filter at the kitchen sink and a certified lab test are worth considering in older homes.
Who supplies water in Bern Township?
It depends where you live. Bern's 2025 comprehensive plan says parts of the township get public water from the Bern Township Municipal Authority, Reading Area Water Authority, Leesport Borough or Western Berks Water Authority. Other homes are on private wells.
Does Bern Township require a well test?
For new wells, yes. Bern's well ordinance requires a certified lab test before occupancy, with limits including zero coliform, nitrate of 10 mg/L or less, iron of 0.3 mg/L or less and hardness of no more than 150 mg/L.
Do you serve Leesport and Bern Township?
Yes. Bern Township is about 15 minutes and Leesport about 20 minutes from our base in Sinking Spring. Call (610) 400-3132 or book a free water test.
