What changes the price
Your water. Hardness alone needs only a softener. Iron, acidic water, sulfur smell or bacteria each add equipment.
Chlorine or chloramine. On city water, a carbon stage protects the softener resin. Purolite says each 1 ppm of chlorine cuts resin life by half.
Drinking water. Adding tankless reverse osmosis on its own is $1,195. It's included in every city package.
Valve choice. The upgraded control valve adds $400.
What it costs to run
Salt. Diamond Crystal says most homes use about two 40-pound bags every one to three months.
Water. UNL Extension says each regeneration uses about 50 gallons and takes 60 to 120 minutes.
Resin life. Purolite says premium resin can last over ten years; chlorine and iron shorten it.
Upkeep. Check the salt monthly and clean the brine valve and float once a year.

Water softener cost: common questions
How much does a water softener cost in Berks County?
A water softener installed by Willow Springs costs $2,295, or $2,695 with an upgraded control valve. That includes the equipment, installation by a licensed plumber, fittings, a bypass valve and startup. Most city-water customers choose a package that also includes drinking water: $3,295 for a combination carbon and softener tank with tankless reverse osmosis.
Can I finance a water softener?
Yes. With approved credit, a $2,295 softener is about $49 a month over 60 months at 9.99% APR. Our City Essential package at $3,295 is about $70 a month.
What makes the price go up?
Problem water. A softener alone handles hardness. Iron, acidic water or bacteria on a well each need their own treatment, such as an iron filter, acid neutralizer or UV light, and each adds to the price. Your free water test tells you which you need.
What does a softener cost to run?
Mostly salt. Diamond Crystal says most homes use about two 40-pound bags every one to three months. UNL Extension says each regeneration uses about 50 gallons of water.
Is the price final?
Yes, once your free water test confirms the setup. We quote a set price up front, then test your water before installing. If the test shows you need something different, we go over the change with you before any work begins.
